This charming devotional painting closely follows compositions developed in Raphael’s workshop and popularised by his chief pupil Giulio Romano. The intimate grouping of the Virgin, Saint Elizabeth, the Christ Child and young Saint John the Baptist (with his characteristic cross) echoes variants of the so-called “Little Holy Family” theme, of which Giulio produced several celebrated examples. The sensitive modelling of the faces, the rich drapery folds, the luminous palette and the architectural background with a distant figure show the refined hand of an artist working in the immediate circle of Giulio Romano during the crucial transitional years after Raphael’s death in 1520. The quality is consistent with the best studio productions from this period.
