Japanese Carved Wooden Bear SAI4204

A striking Japanese carved wooden bear, worked in bold, faceted cuts that give wonderful texture and presence to the piece. The bear is shown in a crouched, attentive pose, its head lowered and one paw extended, capturing a moment of quiet movement. The deep, dark stain highlights the chisel marks and enhances the sculptural quality of the carving.
The underside carries a carved maker’s mark, adding authenticity and linking it to the regional tradition of Kibori Kuma carving — a craft that developed in Hokkaido in the early–mid 20th century and was influenced by both Ainu carving and the popularity of European Black Forest bears.
The surface has a rich, tactile patina, with light age‑related marks consistent with handling and display. A characterful and decorative example of Japanese folk carving, full of personality and craftsmanship.
