We are pleased to offer this rare and delightful ancient Islamic calligraphic tile from Persia.
Based on our comparison of over 5,000 Persian tiles from the ninth to fourteenth century we are dating it to the late12th or very early 13th Century (1075 CE – 1250 CE).
This makes it a significant and important treasure as it is from the early development of such tiles that are referred to as Persian “fritware”.
This tile has several features that make it stand out above others from the period including the following:
it is in excellent condition
the background is cream/white as opposed to the ‘standard’ copper lustre
the vegetal motifs surrounding the calligraphy are raised/carved
the tile has a slight curve rather than being flat like the majority of tiles
the calligraphic inscription is complete within itself
This amazing artifact measures 38cm x 28.8cm x 1.8cm.
We have prepared a two thousand word essay with additional photographs which are available on request (please use the online request form on the right).
