Masterfully animal painting with a yorkshere terrier and his trophy was executed in 1862 by famous represantative of British animalistic school of 19th century Martin Theodore Ward (1799 – 1874). Here is description from the wikipedia: “..The Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire, a rugged region in northern England, In the mid-19th century, workers from Scotland came to Yorkshire in search of work and brought with them several different varieties of small terriers. The duties of the Yorkshire Terrier were to keep the cities purely from RATS and MICE, but was also used to – illegal -. hunting rabbits . It is believed that through intersection several breeds emerged, under which was the most frequently represented Skye Terrier, possibly with additional participation of the Maltese. The Yorkshire Terrier is up to 3.2 kg, a compact companion dog. Typical is the fine, lustrous long, not curly or wavy hair…”
