Description

We purchased this as part of a Victorian architects archive around 25 years ago.

All of the archive material was relating to the architects firm working for local mills mainly in Bradford District. This is the only item remaining as we have enjoyed having it on display – we attended nursery at St. Andrews and you can see the Church spire just behind the mill! A large gasworks structure is shown next to Listerhills Road which winds it way into the distance.

Listerhills was a thriving community before it was demolished – between Longside Lane (now on the University Campus) and Listerhills were row upon row of terraced/back-to-back houses and of course numerous pubs.

When you look at if from any angle you can see a silvery deposit on the image which I believe was for the preparation of a print run or copy.
This is the only one I have come across and based on the size, it would have been for some kind of poster.

There is an enormous amount of wonderful detail on the mill building and also in the background.

Every window has been intricately drawn and captured wonderfully!

In the foreground you can see the tram lines on the road.
Just below the tramlines is the name of the company that engraved/designed this: “Commercial Graphic Co. Bradford”.

There is one person crossing the road and a few people on the pavement.

The addition of the Rolls Royce and the two flat bed trucks just adds an air of quality and nostalgia to this delightful work of art! It has been said that at one time, there were more millionaires per head in Bradford than there were in London. If you have seen the mausoleums in Undercliffe Cemetery of the “Wool Barons” then you will get an idea!

We once found a receipt of a payment from a Bradford Mill to the Inland Revenue dated 1907…the amount paid? £100,000!!!

Several mills with smoke plumes coming out of the chimneys capture a time long lost in history – thousands of people worked here.

And just to add a finishing touch – you can see the moors on the horizon!

This LARGE work of art measures 75cm x 53cm.

There are some knocks, bumps and wear to the edges and corners but they do not affect the image or the desirability of this wonderful piece of history.

It is over 100 years old and is possibly unique / a one off.

It would look amazing framed up and displayed in a reception area or office!
