Rare early helmet. This is a 19th-century Bavarian M1868 Raupenhelm, a military helmet also known as a “caterpillar helmet” due to its distinctive wool crest.
It was worn by Bavarian Jäger battalions and other mounted troops.
The helmet features a leather body and a gilt “L” (Ludwig) monogram on the front badge, referring to King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
It has an original wool “Raupe” (caterpillar) crest and a leather chin strap.
These helmets were in use from around 1800 to 1886, undergoing various modifications over time.
