SOLD: Very Rare documented 10th Century Fatimid chess Knight/Rukh
This piece is remarkable in appearance as it has the abstract reference to the head of a horse. Early chess pieces tend to be figural rather than abstract.
Similar Fatimid chess pieces recorded in rock crystal, wood and ivory.
This historical piece would have been owned by someone wealthy as chess was the “game of Kings”.
This piece has been independently professionally appraised and was found to be of the period (full details on request).
This piece stands tall at 52mm and feels amazing in the hand.
Early chess pieces can command high prices such as the recent sale of a newly rediscovered piece from the famous Lewis set that sold in London for £1 million (including fees). A single 10th Century Islamic chess piece sold for just under £1 million in 2000 at Christie’s (London).
