Gertrude (Mrs G. Hall) was born in West Tanfield in 1874, Yorkshire and educated in London, studying art at the Westminster School of Art and then in Paris.

She is recorded as living in Kensington and Fowey in Cornwall.  In the late 1940s she moved to Nailsworth in Gloucestershire.

Frances Hodgkins a leading New Zealand artist active in England from 1913 wrote: “I stayed some days with friend Gertrude Crompton at her house built on exposed and very steep cliff – her folly I called it…Why do very practical-minded people with great souls loving humanity, build houses on remote and isolated, windswept rocks?”

An example of her work is held in the collection of the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath
