Shiraz school revival

This wonderful work of art is stunning – painted in gold, red, green and brown and is visually very appealing.

There are two princes on horses who are hunting.

One is wearing a red tunic, with highlights in gold, and is lancing a leopard.

The other is wearing a blue tunic, also highlighted in gold, and is holding a falcon on his gloved hand.

There is also a hare/rabbit and what appears to be a fox.

The trees and even the flowers are intricately and beautifully painted. All of this is enclosed within a fantastic border that is typically Persian in style.

Originally made as a book cover or possibly an ink blotter.

The front lacquered panel is exquisitely painted and it is a work of art in itself. It would look awesome framed.

The front panel opens like a book to reveal the blotting sheet which is held in place by four triangular leather sections. Even the underside of the lacquer panel is decorated: a beautiful geometric motif done in gold.

This type of painting was often found on Persian miniatures in the 1600s and 1700s. The detail on the faces, the clothing and the intricate detail on the borders are typical of the earlier miniatures.

In the nineteenth century, there was a revival for this type of painting/scenery.

This lacquered panel was is a genuine nineteenth century work of art in the earlier style.

This was not made for the average person on the street as not everyone was literate in the days that this was made.

Overall, this wonderful Persian lacquered panel / blotter is in excellent condition. There is some MINOR wear at the edges but this does not detract from the overall excellent condition and desirability of this old lacquer panel.

The panel measures 280mm x 210mm
