(SOLD) Satirical election Bill or fly posters 1869 – 1874 Bradford Parliamentary elections, Leeds and West Riding Elections.
We have only ever come across two other sets (or even loose/individual prints) in thirty years of collecting local history printed material –
(i) One set of ten stitched together with blue printed paper wrappers issued by Armitage & Ibbotson (A&I) that we sold to a US collector for £350 five years ago
(ii) One set that appeared at Bonhams in 2004 and sold for £334 that included some printed by Armitage & Ibbotson (please refer to image from Bonhams: the cartoon they selected for their lot listing has the “A&I” monogram of Armitage & Ibbotson in the bottom corner).
We are offering a selection of ten unmounted bill posters as shown.
They are rare survivors because they were designed to be bill posted onto tavern notice boards, out on the street and not meant to last.
Once the election campaigning was finished, they were disposed of as they had served their purpose.
Other larger, mounted bill posters are also available from the same period (1869-1874).
